FAQ

Organizer
Create a jar in under 2 minutes: sign up for free, name your jar (e.g., "John's Retirement" or "Emma’s Baby Shower"), set an end date, and share the link. ChipInJar makes organizing group gifts simple by combining a digital greeting card and group gift collection tool in a single platform. Everyone can chip in and leave messages, making it a shared memory rather than just a transaction.

Perfect for any occasion when you need to pool funds - retirement parties, teacher appreciation gifts, co-worker going-away gifts, birthdays, weddings, baby showers, or any group celebration.
Each jar has a unique link that only people you share with can access. Share it via Slack, WhatsApp, email, or MS Teams - perfect for remote teams who can't pass a physical card around.

To keep the surprise, share only through private direct messages or group chats. Don't post your link on public social media or open forums where the recipient might see it.

Anyone with your link can view the total amount collected and messages, even without contributing. This builds excitement as the gift grows. Individual contribution amounts stay private - only the recipient can see who gave what.

Your link can be passed along, so don’t be surprised if your network helps the collection grow beyond your initial invite list!
No. ChipInJar has no minimum collection requirements. Whether your group raises $20 or $1,000, the recipient receives an Amazon gift card for the total amount collected - no pressure to hit a specific goal.

This removes the stress of "failing" to hit a number and allows the collection to be a positive experience for everyone.

If the final amount isn't enough for a specific item the recipient has in mind, they can simply top up the gift card balance. Every collection is valuable regardless of the total - the recipient can always use it for something they actually want or need.
From your jar page, enter the recipient's email address and set a 6-digit PIN. ChipInJar then sends them a secure link to their personalized gift page where they can read everyone's messages and claim their Amazon gift card code.

Share the PIN with the recipient separately - by text or in person - so only they can open the jar.
Creating and organizing a group gift jar is completely free. To cover secure payment processing and gift card delivery, we deduct a 5% service fee from the total amount collected.

For example, if your group collects $500, the recipient receives a $475 Amazon gift card. Every contribution goes directly into the jar - contributors pay exactly what they choose to give, with no additional charges at checkout.
We understand that plans change. If your jar is still empty, you can delete it anytime.

If contributors have already chipped in, drop us an email and we'll refund all contributors. Please note that refunds are issued minus the non-refundable fee charged by our payment processor - typically 2.9% + 30¢ per transaction. This is a cost we cannot recover once a payment has been processed.
Contributor
No. Despite the name, you don't have to chip in money to participate. A heartfelt message is as valuable as any financial contribution.

The recipient will see and appreciate both. Whether you gave $100 or just a few kind words, you're part of the gift.

This is especially helpful for people who genuinely can't afford to contribute right now, or friends of friends who may be a bit distant, but still want to participate. They can still be part of the celebration and share their thoughts without feeling excluded. This also makes it easier to share the jar more widely without the money pressure.
We keep individual contribution amounts private to eliminate peer pressure. In an office or family setting, budgets vary - not everyone can give the same amount, and that's perfectly okay.

Unlike traditional group gift collections, not even the organizer can see individual amounts in the jar. Only the recipient sees who gave what - a more meaningful and honest way to receive a gift than just seeing a total.

What matters is that the recipient sees every gesture of support, whether it's $10 or a heartfelt message.
Anyone with the jar link can view the total amount collected and read everyone's messages without signing in. To contribute or leave a message, you'll need a free ChipInJar account (18+) - this keeps the jar authentic and spam-free.

You can chip in using any major credit card - no Venmo or e-transfer needed. Payments are processed securely through Stripe, an industry-leading payment gateway.

Your contribution amount stays private - only the recipient will see what you gave. You can also contribute anonymously, or leave a message without chipping in - both are welcome ways to show your support.

Want to help the collection grow? Share the jar link privately with other friends or colleagues who know the recipient - just be careful not to post it publicly where the recipient might see it.
Recipient
You'll receive an email from ChipInJar with a secure link to your gift page. The jar opens to reveal all the messages from everyone who participated. Take your time reading the messages - they are the best part.

To claim your gift card, you'll need a 6-digit PIN from the organizer. This ensures your gift stays private and only you can claim it. Your Amazon gift card claim code will be emailed to you and never expires.

Take a moment to thank your contributors with a message - it means a lot to the people who participated. Once you've picked something with your gift card, you can always come back and share a photo with the group. It's the moment that turns a gift into a shared memory.
An Amazon gift card delivers your gift instantly with no bank details required, functioning as digital cash across hundreds of millions of products. If you can't find what you want on Amazon, it probably doesn't exist.

It also keeps your gift a guilt-free treat. Unlike cash that quietly disappears into groceries or bills, a gift card gives you permission to buy that specific item you've been eyeing. If the amount doesn't fully cover it, pay the difference at checkout - every dollar goes toward something you actually want.
Yes. Opening the jar reveals everyone who participated - their messages, who contributed, and how much.

Individual amounts stay completely private from the rest of the group. Not even the organizer knows who gave what - that's between the contributors and you.

Unlike a traditional card where you're squinting to read tiny signatures, every message here is clear and personal. And unlike a physical card that gets lost in a drawer, the jar stays online - you can revisit this moment whenever you want.
Yes! While ChipInJar is designed for organizers to surprise someone special, you can absolutely create your own jar and share it with friends and family.

Instead of hinting at what you want for your big day - whatever it looks like - and hoping someone guesses it right, you share a ChipInJar link with your circle. Everyone chips in what they can with a sweet note, and you receive an Amazon gift card to get exactly what you wanted - no more unwanted gifts to waste or regift.

It's a modern, greener alternative to a gift registry or Venmo request - more personal, easier to share, and better for the planet.
